Image Enhancement Algorithm for Optical Microstructural Characterization of Shape Memory TiNi Friction Stir Processed
2017
Abstract A key topic regarding TiNi alloys concerns the possibility to attain junctions that preserve the shape memory properties of material. Experimental tests, previously performed on TiNi sheet friction stir processed, have highlighted the need to develop an appropriate image analysis method to quantify the various phases percentages present in the characteristics zones of Friction Stir Welding process. A proper Image Processing procedure has been performed in order to quantify the amount of the martensitic phase and to detect its morphology modification along to the processed region. Particularly each micrographic image, firstly, has been denoised using the 2D Wavelet transform techniq…
Measuring spectrally-resolved information transfer.
2020
Information transfer, measured by transfer entropy, is a key component of distributed computation. It is therefore important to understand the pattern of information transfer in order to unravel the distributed computational algorithms of a system. Since in many natural systems distributed computation is thought to rely on rhythmic processes a frequency resolved measure of information transfer is highly desirable. Here, we present a novel algorithm, and its efficient implementation, to identify separately frequencies sending and receiving information in a network. Our approach relies on the invertible maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) for the creation of surrogate data in t…
Transformaciones multiescala no lineales
2013
Discrete multiresolution analysis and generalized wavelets. J. Appl. Numer. Math., 12:153–192 (1993)], generaliza un cierto tipo de wavelets bio…

Estimation of Muscular Fatigue under Electromyostimulation Using CWT
2012
International audience; The aims of this study are to investigate muscular fatigue and to propose a new fatigue index based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) which is compared to the standard fatigue indexes from literature. Fatigue indexes are all based on the electrical activity of muscles (electromyogram) acquired during an electrically stimulated contraction thanks to two modules (electromyostimulation + electromyography recording) that can analyze EMG signals in real time during electromyostimulation. The extracted parameters are compared with each other and their sensitivity to noise is studied. The effect of truncation of M waves is then investigated, enlightening the robustn…
Vegetation dynamics from NDVI time series analysis using the wavelet transform
2009
A multi-resolution analysis (MRA) based on the wavelet transform (WT) has been implemented to study NDVI time series. These series, which are non-stationary and present short-term, seasonal and long-term variations, can be decomposed using this MRA as a sum of series associated with different temporal scales. The main focus of the paper is to check the potential of this MRA to capture and describe both intra- and inter-annual changes in the data, i.e., to discuss the ability of the proposed procedure to monitor vegetation dynamics at regional scale. Our approach concentrates on what wavelet analysis can tell us about a NDVI time series. On the one hand, the intra-annual series, linked to th…
Control strategy based on wavelet transform and neural network for hybrid power system
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Journal of Applied Mathematics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/375840 Open Access This paper deals with an energy management of a hybrid power generation system. The proposed control strategy for the energy management is based on the combination of wavelet transform and neural network arithmetic. The hybrid system in this paper consists of an emulated wind turbine generator, PV panels, DC and AC loads, lithium ion battery, and super capacitor, which are all connected on a DC bus with unified DC voltage. The control strategy is responsible for compensating the difference between the generated power from the…
The Myriad Virtues of Wavelet Trees
2009
Wavelet Trees have been introduced in [Grossi, Gupta and Vitter, SODA '03] and have been rapidly recognized as a very flexible tool for the design of compressed full-text indexes and data compressors. Although several papers have investigated the beauty and usefulness of this data structure in the full-text indexing scenario, its impact on data compression has not been fully explored. In this paper we provide a complete theoretical analysis of a wide class of compression algorithms based on Wavelet Trees. We also show how to improve their asymptotic performance by introducing a novel framework, called Generalized Wavelet Trees, that aims for the best combination of binary compressors (like,…
Noise reduction in magnetic resonance images by Wavelet transforms: an application to the study of capillary water absorption in sedimentary rocks
2007
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful technique to study capillary water absorption kinetics in sedimentary rocks. However, the noise in the images can limit the correct identification and the quantitative measurement of the average height reached by the wetting front inside the porous material where imbibition occurs. Therefore, denoising methods can be applied to improve the image quality for a more accurate analysis, without the disadvantages of longer acquisition times. This study attempts to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the images acquired by MRI on a sedimentary rock (Pietra di Lecce) using a waveletbased thresholding technique. The idea is to average some slightly di…
Cartoon filter via adaptive abstraction
2016
We propose a non-parametric methodology to realize abstraction images. The redundant wavelet "a trous" algorithm is applied for details detection. An multi-scale circular median filter is used as a smoothing filter. The proposed algorithm is simple and fast on low-cost entry-level hardware. Abstraction in computer graphics defines a procedure that discriminates the essential information that is worth keeping. Usually details, that correspond to higher frequency components, allow to distinguish otherwise similar images. Vice versa, low frequencies are related to the main information, which are larger structures. Contours themselves may also be identified by high frequencies and separate each pi…
